Author: Nishanth Reddy

LASIK eye surgery can advantage many people who experience low to moderate vision problems. LASIK eye surgery is a quick and painless procedure, but there are some risks and complications involved with the surgery.

It is important to understand what happens before, after and during LASIK eye surgery, if you are thinking about having the surgery. It is also advantageous to have realistic expectations of the LASIK eye surgery before the procedure begins.

Most good LASIK surgeons will talk to you and fully explain the before and after procedure. Like most patients, you will probably have many questions about the LASIK eye surgery. The following are a list of frequently asked questions about the LASIK eye surgery.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

It depends on many factors for a person to be a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery. When you make an initial appointment for LASIK eye surgery, your eye care professional will ask many questions and take a thorough health history.

Additionally, you eyes and the history of your vision problems will also be a major factor in whether or not you can have the LASIK eye surgery procedure. For people with certain health problems such as autoimmune diseases and diabetes, LASIK is generally not recommended.

A person cannot have LASIK eye surgery if he is under the age of 18. Certain degenerative eye diseases might also disqualify you from having LASIK eye surgery. Your LASIK surgeon will make a decision based on all of these factors. Those who are not good candidates for the LASIK surgery can have poor outcomes.

Are there any LASIK complications?

Yes. As with any surgery or medical procedure there are LASIK complications and risks. Most people who have the surgery do not have problems, however some people do.

Reduced low light vision is the most commonly reported side effect of the LASIK eye surgery. This can cause glowing or halos around lit objects at night. After some time the side effects of the LASIK eye surgery will disappear over a period of time.

There are some long-term LASIK complications that have been report, though they are rare. Some people could experience worse eyesight than they had before LASIK eye surgery.

Will LASIK vision correction eliminate the need for corrective lenses?

The short answer to that is maybe. Most people who have the LASIK eye surgery may still need to wear some form of glasses or contacts. This does not mean that the surgery had a poor outcome. This is normal and should be expected.

LASIK is not a means to totally correct vision problems. It is designed to enhance vision. Those who go into LASIK expecting perfect vision with an unlikely expectation should not undergo treatment.

How much is the Cost of LASIK eye surgery?

The cost of LASIK eye surgery will depend on where you live, the condition of the eyes and what kind of method is used. Those with more severe vision problems will cost a bit more. Generally, you can plan on spending at least $2000 for the LASIK procedure.

Does insurance cover the cost of LASIK eye surgery?

Because LASIK eye surgery is considered elective, most of the time, insurance plans do not cover it. Some insurance plans have extended eye care plans that help defray the costs of LASIK eye surgery.

If you insurance plan does not cover the cost of LASIK eye surgery, check with your employer. Some employers offer their employees special rates for going to a certain clinic for LASIK. Sometimes LASIK can be paid for by using a cafeteria plan.

Will I need to take time off of work after the procedure?

Yes, most patients do need to take some time off of work following the procedure. This can vary though according to the work. Most of the time patients can start back to work in two to three days, particularly for jobs that are sedentary.

It will be essential to rest the eyes after surgery, so a lot of computer work may bother the eyes after surgery. You will need to talk to your LASIK surgeon about when you can start back to work.

Does the LASIK eye surgery hurt?

The LASIK eye surgery is quick and painless for most patients. Each eye only takes a minute or two. The eye is numbed using drops and patients will stay awake the entire time.

For those who feel uncomfortable about the LASIK eye surgery, a mild sedative can be given. Most patients are able to walk out of the surgery center after the procedure is complete.

A lot of people wonder how much Lasik laser surgery costs but regardless of this, we all know the answer. We do not need to ask for Lasik price information to know that this is a very expensive procedure. However, we usually get blinded by the numbers. We do not see what’s past that. This and other types of surgeries that include technology are expensive not because these are fancy methods but because good quality is not cheap.

What does this mean? When you get a Lasik laser operation or any other surgical operation, sometimes price does not matter. Usually, the reason why these procedures are expensive is because of the fact that these doctors and/or hospitals will need to invest on the right equipment. They cannot just pick any. It is common sense that they’ll be dealing with sensitive areas such as our eyes and other organs. They will need to proceed with utmost care.

Aside from the equipment, the money will be used to find efficient surgeons and technicians. Since these surgeries deal with delicate parts, the training for these are expensive. Hiring just about any graduate of any medical course is suicide for any hospital or institution.

If you decide to have a Lasik surgery, make sure that the hospital or clinic you go to is accredited. Make certain that they have the complete instruments and trained staff. Even if there is tiny risk that the procedure will fail, that small percent is reduced when your doctor is well-prepared.

So if you’re still wondering why the Lasik price information is making your head sore, just be thankful. The price you pay for this is worth all the money since for sure, you’ll obtain that perfect vision you’ve been dreaming of.

LASIK is a recent laser eye surgery technique which FDA approved for use in 1998. As of now, there are no long term studies about its effects. For this reason and because making decisions regarding one’s eye sight is very important, you must do comprehensive research to be able to judge if the pros and cons of LASIK eye surgery are manageable risks for your treatment. If you do the research, you’ll be able to select a skilled and experienced eye surgeon. Many experts acknowledge the fact that the success LASIK heavily depends on the surgeon and not on the machine. You’ll also willingly participate in undergoing the tests because you know these are crucial tests to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery.

What are the pros and cons of LASIK eye surgery? The best benefit is easy to enough to identify. Your eye sight will immediately improve. So if you suffer from any of the following conditions, moderate to high degrees of myopia (nearsightedness), low to moderate degrees of hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism associated with myopia, and have thick corneas, you’ll qualify for the operation.

Two other significant benefits you should consider in weighing the pros and cons of LASIK eye surgery are its fast recovery time and immediate results of improved eye sight. LASIK patients normally get better eye acuity of 75% to 85% within 24 hours. This compares favorably against the two older surgical techniques, radial keratotomy (RK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), where healing & improved vision takes weeks or months to occur. Also, LASIK operations generally take under a minute to perform on one eye, you walk out of the clinic within hours.

Now that the pros have been highlighted, what are the cons found in the pros and cons of LASIK eye surgery?

If the patients’ eye condition is incorrectly diagnosed, the patient might develop permanent debilitating visual symptoms such as glare, halos, or double vision after the operation.

If you don’t have dry eye syndrome, you may develop one. You’d be uncomfortable, and permanent. Left untreated, it will be unhealthy for your corneas.

If you are farsighted, as you age, the benefits of LASIK will diminish with age, you’ll need glasses or contacts in the later years.
Many patients experience significant improvement with their vision after LASEK. But remember to have realistic expectations; your age, eye condition and health are serious considerations. You may still need to wear eyeglasses or contacts after the operation.
Educate yourself. If you do, you’ll competently manage the pros and cons of LASIK surgery. You’ll enjoy keener eye sight afterwards.

LASIK eye surgery has been performed on more than one million of people in the world. Almost all of them are satisfied with the results – they have been able to eliminate the dependence on corrective eyewear and most of them even don’t need prescribed glasses or contacts to see and read anymore.

Having heard of such results, you may begin contemplating LASIK eye surgery. But unfortunately, LASIK surgery is not for everyone. Many people are considered as good LASIK candidate, but some people do not meet the criteria. You have to visit your doctor and consult with him or her, take a comprehensive eye and health examination, answer some questions and your doctor will then determine whether you are eligible for LASIK eye surgery or not, because it is very important to ensure the successful of the LASIK procedure that will be performed later.

The best candidates for LASIK are those with mild to moderate levels of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and a combination thereof – myopia with astigmatism or hyperopia with astigmatism. As technology is evolving rapidly, the future LASIK eye surgery is expected to treat severe refractive errors.

The next criterion is that you must be over 18 years old and have had a stable glass glasses or contact lenses prescription for at least two years. Some doctor may reject patients who are younger than 20 years old because their visions are still unstable.
Potential candidates should be free from certain diseases such as diabetes, ocular herpes simplex, glaucoma, keratononus, cataracts or any eye diseases.

You are not eligible for LASIK if you are pregnant or nursing and have fluctuating hormones. Also an ideal candidate must be a fast healer and have no disease that may affect wound healing such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and HIV. If you are currently taking certain medications such as retinoic acid and steroids that may prevent proper wound healing, you are not a good LASIK candidate.

If you have meet all the conditions needed, it is also important for you to understand the benefits, outcomes, risks and complications of LASIK. If your expectations are too high and unrealistic and you are not a risk taker, you will be rejected by your doctor for LASIK eye surgery.

Besides the criteria from doctor, you also have to consider the LASIK cost, if it is affordable or not and whether your health insurance covers this type of surgery. Usually, the cost is ranging from $1,500 to $2,000 per eye and it may costs more if you choose Wavefront LASIK or bladeless LASIK (IntraLase). Of course it is better for you to ask and discuss the price with your doctor.

After all, if you are eligible for LASIK eye surgery, it is completely up to you to decide whether you choose to continue to the next step of LASIK procedure or just stop there because you are not willing to bear the risks.

How old are you now, because you have to be at least 21 for Lasik. It will cost anywhere from $300 per eye to $1000 per eye depending where you go.

If you are suffering from nearsightedness, this procedure can help you. It is quick and easy and completely successful. How it works is there are a number of incisions made in your eyes to reshape your cornea. The number of incisions is directly related to the intensity of the nearsighted case you possess. By making these incisions, you are reshaping the cornea and the angle that you see images at. This is how nearsightedness is treated, not cured. You cannot fully cure vision impairments such as this, but you can treat them to the point where they are almost non-existent.

RK is one of the top forms of laser surgery used today. There are more people who experience nearsightedness than any other form of vision impairments. If you are thinking of having this surgery done yourself than you should know that there is only one way to go, with Lasik. If you are going to go through with this type of surgery you might as well go with the type of laser that is the absolute best in the world. Put your eyes in the best hands possible. Lasik are the laser professionals and have at their disposal the most advanced lasers in the world. When you are thinking about laser surgery, there is no other way to go. RK is a treatment that Lasik excels in as well as many others.

RK is a very reliable type of vision correction treatment. It is a treatment that can be found no matter where you live. Take advantage of this great technology and fix your vision impairments!

Depending where you live a good surgeon costs about $3,000 and up depending on what your prescription is. I would ask how long they have been doing Laisk and how many procedures they have done, and how many they do weekly or monthly. Moist insurances do not cover lasik, they might pay a couple hundred dollars. The best way to find out if a surgeon is good at lasik is by word of mouth. A nationwide clinic like TLC is a good bet. I know they hire well qualified surgeons and do tons of lasik weekly.

The best thing about Lasik recovery is that it is incredibly short! If you are thinking about undergoing a Lasik laser eye surgery you will find that the recovery process is simple. Once you have decided and gone through your Lasik surgery you will find that you will be able to go back to work and on with your everyday life the very next day!

Following your Lasik surgery you will endure almost zero side effects. In fact, within a day or so after your surgery you can be back to your normal routine and not be forced to refrain from any of your work or leisure time activities.

Be sure you know, though, what type, if any, of after surgery eye care your surgeon will want you to perform. Usually, there is little to no after surgery care necessary. Every lasik surgeon has his or her own after care procedures, so make sure you know what your particular surgeon requires.

Too, occasionally, as with any surgery, you need to be aware that something could go wrong. You will want to be sure you fully understand the risks involved and get your surgeon to tell you about them in depth. You will also want to make arrangements just in case you should have to miss an extra few days of work if for any reason everything does not go smoothly with your surgery.

Truly, after your lasik surgery, you should have no discomfort or side effects—and you’ll be able to see without your glasses within a day or so as your eyes heal from the surgery. Results, though, are practically immediate and you’ll be happily amazed at the dramatic change. So don’t delay, make your appointment for lasik surgery as soon as possible and say good bye to your glasses!
